Colleagues in Conflict : A qualitative content analysis of how journalists in Gaza are portrayed in news reporting. (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study examines framing in news coverage of the Israel-Palestine-conflict. There are two problems in relation to the conflict and media: 1) the media coverage and reporting, and 2) the vulnerability of the journalists. This study aims to examine how these problems interact, that is: how news media portray events where journalists have fallen victim to attacks in Gaza. This is in order to further understand which narratives the media’s news coverage construct about the journalists. Previous studies have stated that selection and the use of language have a crucial role in the media coverage of the conflict, and that journalists in Gaza are in a vulnerable position as well as a complex work situation. It is also stated in previous research that the narrative hero is recurrent in news reports about journalists who have died while on duty. To fulfill the aim of the study, 12 news articles from the following media are analyzed: SVT, Aftonbladet, CNN, and Al Jazeera. The analysis is executed through a qualitative content analysis and connected to framing theory as well as the concept of narrative. The result of the study shows that the news media coverage constructs the following narratives: journalists as victims and journalists as heroes. This was made visible by analyzing the material based on word choices, sources, and facts, which also identified three perspectives that are seen and heard in the articles: Israel’s perspective, the journalists’ perspective, and external perspective. The factors—word choices, sources, and facts—also shaped how these perspectives are presented in the articles, where the journalists’ perspective became the most prominent.
