Motivationen till skönlitterär läsning bland barn och unga minskar. Syftet med föreliggande studie är att bidra med kunskap om hur gymnasieelever upplever sin motivation till skönlitterär läsning samt att belysa vilka undervisningsrelaterade faktorer eleverna själva upplever kan stärka deras intresse och motivation för skönlitterär läsning. Syftet uppfylls genom tre frågeställningar: hur beskriver gymnasielever sin motivation till skönlitterär läsning, vilka faktorer upplever eleverna påverkar deras motivation till skönlitterär läsning, hur beskriver eleverna att deras motivation till skönlitterär läsning kan främjas i undervisningen. Med utgångspunkt i självbestämmandeteorin och baserat på fokusgruppssamtal synliggör studien gymnasielevers upplevelser av motivation till läsning i och utanför klassrummet. Resultatet visar att eleverna har en övervägande negativ syn på skönlitterär läsning och främst motiveras av yttre motivation i form av betyg och bedömning. På fritiden exkluderas läsningen på grund av andra aktiviteter, främst på grund av läsningens låga tempo. 

Abstract [en]

 The motivation for reading fiction among children and adolescents is declining. The aim of the present study is to contribute knowledge about how upper secondary school students perceive their motivation for reading fiction, as well as to identify instructional factors that students themselves perceive as capable of enhancing their interest and motivation. The aim is addressed through three research questions: how upper secondary students describe their motivation for reading fiction, which factors they perceive as influencing this motivation, and how they believe motivation for reading fiction can be fostered in educational settings. Drawing on Self-Determination Theory and based on focus group discussions, the study highlights upper secondary students’ experiences of motivation for reading both in and outside the classroom. The findings indicate that students generally hold a negative attitude toward reading fiction and are primarily driven by extrinsic motivation, such as grades and assessment. In their leisure time, reading is often deprioritized in favor of other activities, largely due to its perceived slow pace.
