Meanings of participating in the project “Cultural experiences” : A qualitative analysis (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: A variety of meaningful activities in everyday life is an important factor for health. The project “Kulturella upplevelser” offered cultural activities that were otherwise not available in elderly care homes.

Aim: To describe the meanings the project “Cultural experiences” has had for older people living in elderly care homes.

Method: Qualitative design with an inductive approach and purposeful sampling. Data collection was carried out in six elderly care homes facilities through semi-structured interviews, asynchronous interviews and observations. Qualitative content analysis was used as method of analysis.

Results: Three categories were identified: The activities created festive shared experiences and strengthened community in elderly care homes, The activities contributed to opportunities for development and gaining new experiences, The activities became a highlight in everyday life and created a calm feeling in the body that lingered.

Conclusion: People living in elderly care homes should have the opportunity to engage in various activities together.

Implications: Occupational therapists should be active in the implementation of group interventions in elderly care homes. For example, using cultural activities to promote social participation.
