Bakgrund: Den palliativa vården bedrivs i stor omfattning i hemmet, vilket kan vara krävande för alla inblandade. Forskning visar att den närstående behöver stöd för att orka finnas där för den döende och för att själv inte riskera att utveckla fysisk och psykisk ohälsa. Dock blir det ofta, av naturliga skäl, patientfokus inom hemsjukvården då tids- och resursbrist är ett faktum.

Syfte: Att beskriva distriktssköterskors erfarenheter gällande deras stöd till närstående inom palliativ hemsjukvård.

Metod: En kvalitativ intervjustudie med induktiv ansats genomfördes. Data samlades in med hjälp av semistrukturerade intervjuer med 14 distriktssköterskor. Intervjuerna analyserades utifrån kvalitativ innehållsanalys. 

Resultat: Dataanalysen resulterade i sex subkategorier. De bildade i sin tur tre kategorier; Vikten av en fungerande kommunikation, Vikten av ett fungerande arbetssätt och Vikten av att skapa trygghet.

Slutsatser: Det som behövs för att kunna ge stöd till den närstående är lyhördhet, tid, god kommunikation, kontinuitet, erfarenhet och helst en längre vårdrelation som skapar trygghet. Hinder kan vara tidsbrist, bristande samförstånd samt språk- och kulturskillnader. Mer ingående samtalskunskap och utbildning i att leda människor i kris saknas, men även kunskap om och implementering av familjecentrerad omvårdnad. 

Background: Palliative care takes place mostly in the home, which can be difficult. Earlier studies show that next-of-kin needs support to be able to be there for the dying person and to avoid developing physical and mental ill-health for oneself. Despite this, because of natural reasons, focus turns towards the patient when the palliative home care suffers from lack of time and resources.

Aim: To describe district nurses’ experiences of their support to next-of-kin in palliative home-based care. 

Methods: A qualitative interview study with inductive approach was performed. Data was collected through semi-structured interviews with 14 district nurses. The interviews were analysed by using qualitative content analysis.

Results: During the data analysis, six sub-categories emerged. Three categories were created; The importance of a functioning communication, The importance of a functioning way to work and The importance of building security.

Conclusions: It requires sensitivity, time, good communication, continuity, experience and if possible, a long caring relationship which create security to give support to next-of-kin. Obstacles could be lack of time, deficient agreement and differences concerning language and culture. Deeper knowledge regarding difficult conversations and education to guide people in crisis are missing, but also knowledge of and implementation of family-oriented care.
