Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Today, the father is seen as an active and committed parent and there has been a change from the fact that the father was previously seen as the one who would work and provide for the family. The nurse at BHV is in a key position when it comes to support the father.

Aim: To explore child healthcare nurse experiences of new fathers needs of support in his parenting role.

Method: A qualitative interview study with inductive approach was used. Data was collected through semi-structed interviews, a qualitative content analysis according to Graneheim and Lundman was used in the analysis.

Result: Two themes emerged in the analysis: A relationship is established and To make the daily life functioning. The study shows that the experience of the BHV nurses are that the father has a need for individual and practice support. The father needs support in finding his own routines with his child. The parents need to be offered equal support.

Conclusion: The study shows that the BHV nurses experienced difficulties in supporting their father as he rarely participates in first visits to BHV. The conclusion is that it would be desirable for the individual dad call to be fully implemented in order for the BHV nurses to be able to catch up with the new father and more easily pay attention to his possible need of for support.
