Horrible monsters and destroyed victims : A qualitative content analysis of the portrayal of sexual abuse of children on the Internet in Swedish and Canadian press (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

20 percent of the world’s children have been subjected to sexual abuse and with the development of the Internet, perpetrators are given more opportunities to contact children for sexual purposes. There are clear guidelines for how sexual abuse of children should be portrayed in the media and how it affects the victims. The study will investigate how two of the largest daily newspapers in Sweden and Canada depict the same case of sexual abuse of children via the Internet. We also intend to investigate how the countries relate to their press ethical rules in their depiction of the case and to examine the change in the portrayal before and after the verdict.

Eight articles have been reviewed in analysis charts through the methods qualitative content analysis and framing analysis. The articles are taken from the Swedish newspapers Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet and the Canadian newspapers The Globe and Mail and Toronto Star. One article from before and one after the offender’s verdict has been analyzed from each newspaper. The case is about a Swedish man who exposed children to sexual abuse over the Internet and the victims were from the US, Scotland and Canada. This was the first Swedish case involving sexual abuse on the internet, which was classified as rape and, with the outcome, it could set the standard for similar cases in the future.

With the support of the framing theory, previous research and the countries’ press ethical rules, we can establish that there are interesting differences and similarities in the portrayal of the case. The Swedish newspaper articles describe the crimes graphically and in detail, while the Canadian articles describe the crimes using adjectives. The Swedish articles contain descriptions and statements that convicted the perpetrator prior to judgment. A striking similarity between the countries' articles is that the main focus is on the perpetrator. Both before and after the sentence he is demonized for the crimes he has committed and the articles portray him as a horrific monster.
