The man, the myth, the stereotype : A semiotic analysis of masculinity in Axe commercials (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
The following work is a study of how media reproduce stereotypes and how masculinity is presented in advertising. Axe is a leading brand in the industry for grooming products and is a company that has received a great deal of criticism for reproducing toxic masculinity and sexism through its marketing campaigns. The company and, more specifically, some of their advertising campaigns is the object of the study. The purpose of the work is thus to investigate how Axe portrays masculinity in four selected commercials to see how media reproduce masculinity and normative gender stereotypes. We will also explain how these representations interconnect with the context of social changes, regarding the changing view of masculinity, to see how Axe marketing incorporates such changes. The analysis will be performed using semiotics as a method. Since the work is based on qualitative analysis, we have chosen to analyze the aspects of the material that can be interpreted as signs and codes for masculinity, and how the company reads these social codes and cultures to create a message that appeals to potential consumers. Furthermore, the results of the study are discussed, which shows that Axe has made changes thus breaking norms and notions of masculinity in their new commercials. Nevertheless, the company is ultimately operating within the capitalist system and seeks to attract a larger target group. The company is only norm-breaking enough to fit the capitalist agenda.
