Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

SUMMARY

Background: Endometriosis is one of the most common gynecological diagnoses in the world that affects every 10 women. Symptoms of endometriosis may affect women, their relatives and the environment. The women are affected both physically, mentally and emotionally during the diagnosis, but hits extra hard if the diagnosis is not made early. The ignorance of general nurses leads to delaying the diagnosis. Person-centered nursing can contribute to better treatment and also good care for women suffering from endometriosis.

Aim:The purpose of the literature review was to describe women's experiences of living with endometriosis.

Method:The literature review with inductive approach has been chosen as a method where the overview was based of 12 scientific articles.

Results: Based on the results, three categories and seven subcategories. Categories became Physical (Pain, Infertility), Psychological (Depression, Well-being, Self-confidence) and Social Aspects (Relationship and sexual health, job and leisure). The women explained that they were physically affected by pain in various forms such as pelvic pain, dyspareunia and dysmenorrhea which also were the most common symptoms. Based on the psychological aspects, there were feelings of anger, helplessness, lack of control of their lives and decreased self-confidence. The social aspects such as jobs, relationships, education and social activities were also negatively affected by the illness.

Conclusion: Endometriosis affected women in many ways and there is a lack of knowledge about the disease today. Working with person- centered care in focus create an opportunity to meet woman at their individual level. Further research within the subject was considered necessary to increase knowledge and develop diagnostics and treatment methods to improve women's daily lives.
