Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
Background: Child health services is based on health promotion and preventive interventions. Having counselling about diet is a essential part of the work as a child health care nurse (CHC-nurse). It is desirable for a CHC-nurse to have a family-centered approach in order to reach a partnership with the parents.
Objective: To describe the CHC-nurses experiences of providing dietary counselling to preschoolers and their parents.
Method: A qualitative study with an inductive approach was conducted. A total of nine nurses participated in interviews using semi-structured questions.
Results: The content analysis resulted in the maincategorie;”Dietary counselling whith the family in focus” and two generic categories; “To listen to the family” and “Challenges in dietary counselling”. The result showed that dietary advice was more likely to be received by the family when their needs were taken in consideration. To be responsive towards the specific needs of the family was more significant than giving general advice.
Conclusion: The experiences of CHC-nurses regarding dietary counselling emphasizes the importance of being attentive to the individual family's need to receive it properly and make the most of it. This subject awakens different challenges, but with a family-centered approach diet counselling tends to work well.
