I’m exhausted!, A qualitative literature review of nurses’ experiences which lead to fatigue (English)
Abstract [en]

Background: Fatigue is one of many causes which lead to sick leave among nurses. The causes, symptoms and consequences of fatigue are complex. The responsibility of a nurse to itself and society could be jeopardized if there’s a lack of adequate coping strategies. To anchor the findings of this study coping was used as a theoretical framework.

Aim: To describe experiences in the nurses’ work that lead to fatigue.

Method: Literature review with a qualitative design and inductive approach.

Results: Two main themes were identified followed by six subthemes. The main themes were inside the workplace and the nurse’s emotions. The subthemes were a heavy workload, colleagues’ influence in the workplace, stress from several directions, the relationship between nurse and patient, not being enough and finally overwhelming emotions and insecurity.

Conclusion: Many situations in nursing lead to fatigue. The development of fatigue is related to both work itself and the nurses’ feelings. Different strategies are used to cope with fatigue.
