Abstract [en]

Water scarcity is a global dilemma and place many obstacles towards a society's capacity for development. Palestine is one of the areas exposed to water shortages, as well as having a problematic affiliation to the access of water they have. Already scarce groundwater resources are over-consumed, and they lack sufficient control over their own water resources and assets. This has shown to contribute to negative effects on the lives of Palestinian residents.

The study aims to study the impact of water scarcity on individuals' everyday lives, livelihoods and living conditions. The research questions that are being answered are, How do the informants reason about the lack of water? how does the water shortage affect their everyday lives, and what strategies and or methods do individuals use to deal with the situation. Collection of empirical material was gathered with five semi-structured in-depth interviews. To be able to recount stories and experiences of the informants from an individual perspective to satisfy the study with empirical data for analysis. The empirical material was then analysed using the Sustainable Livelihood Framework. To capture the many complexities of both the constraints and opportunities they are exposed to, and to evaluate them based on the context they are in.

The result indicates the informants identifying the occupation as the main actor behind the problematic situation. In the interviews, the informants emphasize that they need to use several different strategies to best manage everyday life in adherence to their situation. For example, reusing all left-over water for other purposes. Other examples of strategies and methods used to alleviate the problem of water scarcity are, building wells, collecting, and storing rainwater, washing clothes in larger chunks and more rarely etcetera.

The result also shows limiting factors in everyday life, an example being poor hygiene that impedes social events and meetings etc. As well as social tensions accumulating within the community due water scarcity. The results also show impediments on the individual's livelihood being affected. With less access to water, one can no longer cultivate to the same extent, affecting the agricultural sector but also cultivation on a smaller scale, for example on the individual's gardens at their homes. Which in turn acts as an economic buffer where they can grow their own raw materials and therefore impeding on both the daily life and means of one’s livelihood. There several of these interconnected cases illustrated within the study. In summary there is an interconnection between the effects of the situation and the context that the Palestinian people find themselves in and the effects this has on their daily life as well as livelihood.
