Purpose: Today, there are common places in cities that were once used for social interactions but no longer fulfil these functions. This has led to the loneliness of the population as well as unused places. The aim of the study is to create a design model that will achieve social sustainability in public places. The model will then be used as a basis for two design proposal in Jönköping

Method: The methods used in this research are case studies in form of observation and site analysis based on Jan Gehls’ 12 quality criteria and a survey for public opinion.

Findings: The survey resulted in a design model that was based on Gehl's 12 criteria and the public's priorities and preferences. The model contains the nine most prioritized criteria and various aesthetic principles as well as activity-based functions. The model can be used as an aid in early planning of public places to achieve social sustainability.

Developed design proposals have been designed to test the model's usability and provide an illustration of what public space can look like. Two proposals were presented when considering the design model. The first proposal for a future esplanade and the second for an already existing square.

Implications: This study has contributed to the knowledge of how public places should be designed for social interactions to take place again with the help of the developed design model.

Limitations: One of the limitations that has made the study more difficult has been the Covid-19 pandemic that went on for most of the study. The given time period has been another limitation which has affected the completeness of the study.

Syfte: Idag råder folktomma platser i städer som en gång i tiden användes till sociala interaktioner men som längre inte uppfyller dessa funktioner. Detta har både lett till ensamhet hos befolkningen och outnyttjade platser. Målet med undersökningen är att uppnå social hållbarhet hos offentliga platser genom att skapa en utformningsmodell. Modellen ska sedan användas som underlag till två utformningsförslag i Jönköping.

Metod: De metoder som har använts i denna undersökning är fallstudie i form av observation och platsanalys utifrån Jan Gehls 12 kvalitetskriterier samt enkätundersökning av allmänhetens prioriteringar.

Resultat: Undersökningen resulterade i en utformningsmodell som grundades utifrån Gehl 12 kriterier och allmänhetens prioriteringar och preferens. Modellen innehåller de nio mest prioriterade kriterier och olika estetiska principer samt aktivitetsbaserade funktioner. Modellen kan användas som hjälpmedel vid tidig planering av offentliga platser för att uppnå social hållbarhet.

Framtagna utformningsförslag har gestaltats för att testa modellens användbarhet och ge en illustration av hur offentlig plats kan se ut. Två förslag gestaltades vid prövning av utformningsmodellen. Det första förslaget för en framtida esplanad och de andra för ett redan befintligt torg.

Konsekvenser: Denna undersökning har bidragit med kunskap om hur offentliga platser bör utformas för att sociala interaktioner igen ska ske med hjälp av den framtagna utformningsmodellen.

Begränsningar: En av begränsningarna som har försvårat undersökningen har varit Covid-19 pandemin som pågick större delen av studien. Den givna tidsperioden, våren 2020, har varit en annan begränsning som har påverkat undersökningens fullständighet.
