Nurses’ experiences of the SEEK-model : Identification of parents with psychosocial risk factors in child health care (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Psychosocial risk factors in the child’s environment affect the child’s development and health. This can lead to mental illness, which is a globally growing problem. The aim of child health care is to work preventively in order to be able to promote children’s physical, psychological and social health and development. In child health care in Sweden there is currently no implemented evidence based method for identifying psychosocial risk factors within families in need of support.  The Safe Environment for Every Kid (SEEK) model has been developed by professor Howard Dubowitz in order to meet that need.

Purpose: To illustrate the child health nurses’ experiences with the introduction of the SEEK-model in child health care.

Method: The study was carried out with semi-structured focus group interviews with 23 child health nurses and the interviews were analyzed with qualitative content analysis.

Result: The results showed that the introduction of the SEEK-model strengthened the work with the families. Partly because the structured form opened up for in-depth conversations with the parent, but also because SEEK paid attention to the whole family's health and clarified the family's needs. The results also showed that the child health nurses became secure with the new way of working through experience and collaboration. Partly by finding a new routine with the families and partly by sharing the responsibility between the child health care nurse and the social worker.

Conclusions: The study showed that SEEK can be a useful model within child health care for identifying psychosocial risk factors in families and consequently preventive measures for children’s health can be initiated.
