Empathic Social Studies Teaching, why is That Not a Thing? : A Qualitative Study on How Social Studies Teachers at Upper Secondary School View and Work with the Fundamental Empathic Values of the Curriculum (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The fostering of an understanding for other people and the ability to empathize, from the Swedish curriculum, indicates that empathy is a vital part of the Swedish school system’s fundamental values. However, a scientifically developed approach to incorporating empathy in social studies subject teaching has not been established by the empirical sciences. Therefore, this study aims to contribute with knowledge of how social studies teachers at Swedish upper secondary school work in relation to the fostering of empathy, as formulated in the curriculum. The study therefore seeks to give insight into how social studies teachers work to invoke the empathic fundamental values of the curriculum, the aspects that can facilitate or obstruct said teaching, as well as under which workplace-related circumstances the work is carried out. In order to examine the experiences of social studies teachers in said regard the study applies a qualitative method, along with a grounded theory approach. In addition, ten semi-structured interviews with social studies teachers at upper secondary school constitute the empirical data of this study.

The results of this study show how empathic social studies teaching consists of and is dependent on work procedures, work-related circumstances, teaching opportunities, and teaching difficulties. Work procedures related to empathic social studies teaching consists of interactive and reflective teaching activities, which aim to foster knowledge of, understandings, and feelings for other people. The prerequisites for such teaching depend on the structure of the establishment. More specifically, empathic social studies teaching is reliant on that the workplace facilitates practical support, a work plan for the implementation of values fostering, and that the goals of the fundamental values are based in the school’s reality. On a different note, the factors that can complicate empathic social studies teaching stem from non-empathic norms and cultures among students, as well as housing and school segregation. Then again, these teaching difficulties also count as teaching opportunities, since the counteracting of said difficulties involves empathic value teaching. This teaching is further made possible due to how democratic value writings from the curriculum and legislation overlap with the core content of the subject.
