The effect of a variety of objects’ arrangement on the ability to subitize : A qualitative study with pupils in first grade (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to provide a picture of how the space between a variety of objects’ affect the pupils’ ability to subitize and which aspects of subitizing become visible during the subitizing process.  The study founded in MacDonald and Wilkins’ theory of the seven subitizing aspects. To answer the study’s purpose and framing of questions, qualitative semi-structured interviews with a group of pupils in first grade were chosen. The result shows that the arrangement has an impact on pupils’ subitizing, but it also shows that it is more common for the perceptual aspects to be used during subitizing. The conclusion of the study is that a larger space between the elements have a negative effect on the pupils’ ability to subitize and that the conceptual aspects of subitizing are used less often than the perceptual aspects of subitizing.
