How do teachers create an understanding of relations of numbers? : An observational study on teaching of additive part-whole relations (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

An important basis for students to solve problems of addition and subtraction, is having learned part-whole relations of numbers. Seeing parts and the whole, and understanding their relation, makes solving addition and subtraction successfully easier for students. To achieve this, they need instructions which are structured in a way that enables this. The aim of this study is to observe through a sociocultural perspective how part-whole relations of numbers is taught in primary school. The analysis has been done with the help of Mediating Primary Mathematics (MPM), taking into consideration which artefacts and inscriptions teachers use and how they mediate the mathematical content. The result shows, among other things, whether artefacts and inscriptions were or weren’t structural. It also shows differences regarding how teachers demonstrate generalizations within mathematical methods; in some lesson episodes it never occurred but in others it was more frequent. The result indicates that there are differences regarding how teachers build mathematical connections, including the connections between artefacts and inscriptions, and to which extent teachers make use of, and build on, students’ contributions.
