I denna uppsats undersöker jag sociologen Zygmunt Baumans analys av förintelsen i dialog med historikern Moishe Postone, teologen Richard L. Rubenstein och den politiska teoretikern Hannah Arendt. Jag läser Bauman utifrån tre frågeställningar: hans förståelse av antisemitismen, modernitetens relation till förintelsen och hans moralteoretiska analys av förintelsen. Som ett modernt folkmord var förintelsen, enligt Bauman, kombinationen av en antisemitisk ideologi – där ”juden” fick rollen som ett gränsöverskridande obehag – och en modern rationell byråkrati. Detta möjliggjorde i sin tur förintelsens genomförande såväl organisatoriskt som etiskt. Bauman beskriver detta som en trädgårdsmästarstats verk där tekniskt kunnande kombineras med en estetisk vision. Detta leder till ett etiskt problem: om samhället skapar våra etiska villkor och möjliggjorde ett folkmord, hur är det möjligt att göra motstånd? Baumans lösning är att härleda moralen till pre-samhälleliga källor – det direkta ansvaret till den andre – och att samhället stör denna moral. Därmed ser Bauman ett möjligt motstånd mot omoralen genom en etisk subjektivitet baserad på ansvar gentemot den andre.

In this essay, I examine the sociologist Zygmunt Bauman’s analysis of the holocaust in dialogue with the historian Moishe Postone, the theologian Richard L. Rubenstein and the political theorist Hannah Arendt. My reading of Bauman is made from three questions: his understanding of antisemitism, the relation between modernity and the holocaust and his moral theoretical analysis of the holocaust. As a modern genocide, the holocaust was, according to Bauman, the combination of an anti-semitic ideology, where “the jew” was characterized as a boundary-crossing malaise, and a modern rational bureaucracy which made its implementation possible, both in organizational terms as in ethical. Bauman describes this as the effort of a gardener state where technical knowledge is combined with an esthetic vision. This leads to an ethical problem: if society produces our ethical conditions and made a genocide possible, how is it possible to resist? Bauman’s solution is to derive morality from pre-societal sources – the direct responsibility towards the other – and that society interrupts this morality. Therefore, Bauman sees a possibly resistance to immorality through an ethical subjectivity based on responsibility towards the other.
