Studiens utgångspunkt har varit att undersöka hur socialarbetare och vårdande professioner ser på riskfaktorer kopplade till suicid hos äldre och hur de arbetar för att upptäcka samt eventuellt förebygga suicid bland föreliggande befolkningsgrupp. För att möjliggöra detta har sammanlagt åtta semistrukturerade intervjuer genomförts med biståndshandläggare, psykiatrisjuksköterskor och anhörigkonsulenter i fyra kommuner i Sverige. Studiens frågeställningar har delats in i två huvudområden: riskfaktorer och handlingsstrategier. Det empiriska materialet har analyserats via en tematisk analys där två centrala teman kopplat till riskfaktorer har framkommit vilka är: psykisk ohälsa och ensamhet med behov av fler sociala insatser som undertema. De tre centrala teman som framkom kopplat till handlingsstrategier består av riskbedömning, utbildningar och samverkan. Resultatet diskuteras sedan utifrån tidigare forskning kring suicid bland äldre och nätverksteorin samt den interpersonella teorin om suicid. Studiens centrala slutsatser kan sammanfattas genom att de centrala riskfaktorerna till suicid hos äldre är ensamhet och psykisk ohälsa där dessa bör motverkas genom att skapa fler sociala insatser. Vad som mer har framkommit är att socialarbetare och vårdprofessioner genom att ha strikta handlingsplaner och att vara observanta, har möjligheten att både förebygga, identifiera samt motverka suicid bland äldre klienter. Det visade sig därtill under studiens gång att interna- samt vidareutbildningar inom olika samhällsinstanser kan vara till stor hjälp för att förebygga och motverka suicidalitet. Samverkan och samarbete mellan olika institutioner och i detta fall mellan hälso- och sjukvård och socialtjänst också har etablerats som en central del i arbetet med och mot suicid. 

The starting point of the study has been to investigate how social workers and caring professions view risk factors related to suicide in the elderly and how they work to detect and possibly prevent suicide among this population group. To enable this, a total of eight semi-structured interviews were conducted with social service officers, psychiatric nurses and relative consultants in four municipalities in Sweden. The study's questions have been divided into two main areas: risk factors and action strategies. The empirical material has been analyzed through a thematic analysis where two central themes linked to risk factors have emerged which are: mental illness and loneliness with the need for more social interventions as a sub-theme. The central themes that emerge linked to action strategies are risk assessment, educations and cooperation. The results are then discussed on the basis of previous research on suicide among the elderly and on the basis of network theory and interpersonal theory. The study's central conclusions can be summarized in that the central risk factors for suicide in the elderly are loneliness and mental illness, where these should be counteracted by creating more social platforms and initiatives. What more the study has concluded is that social workers and caring professions, by having strict action plans and being observant, have the opportunity to both prevent, identify and counteract suicide among older people. It also turned out during the course of the study that in-house and further education in various social institutions can be of great help in preventing and counteracting suicidality. Collaboration and cooperation between different institutions and in this case between health care and social services has also been established as a central part of the work with and against suicide.
