Consequences in daily life after peripheral nerve injuries in the upper extremity : - A cross-sectional study (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Pain after peripheral traumatic nerve injuries is associated with risk of activity impairment/disabilty, impaired health-related quality of life, anxiety and depression.

Purpose: Identify differences and associations of self-assessed activity ability, health related quality of life, anxiety and depression in participants who developed neuropathy with and without pain after peripheral traumatic ner injury-

Methods:A corss-sectional study: 72 people with neurpathic pain (PNS) after traumatic nerve injury and 63 people without pain (PNUS). Self- assessments of activity ability (Quick DASH), health- related quality of life (RAND -36), anxiety and depression (HADS) were retrospectively analyzed. Correlations were used to identify factors that could affect pain.

Results: Siginificant differences with higher Quick DASH scores (p=0,001) in the PNS group. Average Quick DASH for PNS 33,45 and PNUS 7,5/100 points. Significant lower score RAND-36 for PNS of physical function and physical rolefunction (P<0,001), social function (p=0,040) and emotional rolefunction (p=0,003). No difference HADS anxiety (p=0,141) depression (p=0,188) between groups. Significant correlation with impaired activity capacity (Quick DASH) and impaired health- quality of life (RAND- 36) (p<0,001 rs=-0,609**)

Conclusion: PNS negatively affected activity ability, physical function, physical role funcion, social function and social role function. PNUS estimated activity capacity equally with a normal population.

Implication: Occupational therapy client- centered intervention can be the basis of reducing activity impairment and health- related quality of life through the assessment of pain, activity, and fuctional capacity.
