Abstract [sv]

Stress innebär en del komplexa reaktioner som sker i kroppen exempelvis en ökning av fysiologiska, psykologiska och beteendemässiga försvarsberedskaper. Stress innefattar bland annat en ökning av kortisol respektive dehydroepiandrosteron (DHEA) vid stress. Denna höjning är en följd av aktiveringen av hypotalamus-hypofys-binjureaxeln. Både kortisol och DHEA produceras av binjurebarken. Kortisols främsta funktion är att verka som ett kraftfullt antiinflammatoriskt hormon. Medan DHEA har funktionen att omvandlas till testosteron hos män och östrogen hos kvinnor. Båda hormonerna påverkas av dygnsvariationen och är vanligtvis på högsta nivå på morgonen och därefter gradvis sänks. Syftet med denna studie var att kartlägga studenters stressnivåer under pågående kurs och vid tentamenstillfälle genom att mäta nivåerna av stressmarkörerna kortisol och DHEA samt genom en enkätundersökning. Fjorton stycken frivilliga studenter lämnade självtagna salivprover vid två olika tillfällen tillsammans med ett frågeformulär om deras olika stressupplevelser. Kortisol och DHEA som är stressmarkörersnivåer analyserades i salivproverna via kompetetiv ELISA. Resultaten från stressmarkörersnivåer vid pågående kurs och vid tentamenstillfälle jämfördes och kopplades till samtliga svar från enkätundersökningen. Resultatet visade ökade DHEA-nivåer för majoriteten av studenterna innan tentamenstillfället (under kursens gång) medan ökade kortisolnivåer visades för majoriteten vid tentamenstillfälle för båda könen. Resultaten gjorde inga samband mellan stressmarkörernas nivåer och stressgraden bland studenterna. Ingen korrelation mellan markörerna kortisol och DHEA kunde hittas enligt resultatet. 

 

Abstract [en]

Stress involves a number of complex reactions that take place in the body for example an increase in physiological, psychological and behavioural defence preparations. Stress includes, among other things, an increase in cortisol and dehydroepiandrosterone (DHEA) during stress. This elevation is a consequence of the activation of the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis. Both cortisol and DHEA are produced by the adrenal cortex. Cortisol's main function is to act as a powerful anti-inflammatory hormone. While DHEA has the function of converting to testosterone in men and oestrogen in women. Both hormones are affected by the diurnal variation and are usually at their highest level in the morning and then gradually decrease. The purpose of this study was to map students' stress levels during an ongoing course and at examination time by measuring the levels of the stress markers cortisol and DHEA as well as through a survey. Fourteen volunteer students provided self-taken saliva samples on two different occasions together with a questionnaire about their various stress experiences. Cortisol and DHEA which are stress marker levels were analysed in the saliva samples via competitive ELISA. The results from the stress marker levels during the ongoing course and at the time of the exam were compared and linked to all answers from the survey. The result showed increased DHEA-levels for the majority of students before the exam (during the course), while increased cortisol levels were shown for the majority at the time of the exam for both sexes. The results made no connections between the levels of the stress markers and the degree of stress among the students. No correlation between the markers cortisol and DHEA could be found according to the results.
