Denna studie undersöker hur kvinnor framställs i samband med abort i amerikansk film. Studien undersöker medierepresentationen av abort i amerikansk film med syfte att bidra med kunskap om representationen av kvinnliga karaktärer som genomför en abort. Studiens material består av två amerikanska filmer, Never Rarely Sometimes Always och Unpregnant. Studien grundar sig i en kritisk diskursanalys (CDA) som teori. Vidare består studiens teoretiska ramverk av genusteorin, stereotyper och stigma.

Studien genomförs med hjälp av multimodal kritisk diskursanalys (MCDA) och dess metodologiska analysverktyg, vilka appliceras på visuella tecken och verbalt språk. Analysverktygen gör det möjligt att identifiera uppenbara eller underliggande diskurser och dess betydelse i materialet. 

De semiotiska resurser som framkommer dekonstrueras och resultatet diskuteras utifrån fem identifierade teman. Diskurser om abort som ett odramatiskt beslut och om strukturella hinder dominerar i filmerna. Däremot framkommer det i materialet att diskursen om abort som odramatisk tar olika riktning. Resultatet visar att de abortsökande kvinnornas framställning påverkas av stigmat kring abort samt hur kvinnan skildras i ljuset av sociala förväntningar och maktmissbruk. Inom dessa teman framkommer diskurser om stigmatisering, patriarkat, traditionella genusnormer och religion. Mot bakgrund av detta framställs kvinnan som emotionell och sårbar, men även som självständig och stark då hon inte låter dessa faktorer eller känslan av skam påverka henne till den grad att en abort uteblir. De semiotiska resurserna synliggör även ett tema om hur kvinnor stöttar varandra vilket rör diskursen om systerskap. 

This study focuses on how women are represented in connection to abortion in American film. The purpose of the study is to examine abortion in American film to study the representation of the female characters who carry out an abortion. The study's material consists of two American films, namely Never Rarely Sometimes Always and Unpregnant. The study is based on a critical discourse analysis (CDA) as a theory. Furthermore, the study's theoretical framework also consists of gender theory, stereotypes, and stigma.

The study is carried out using a multimodal critical discourse analysis (MCDA) and its methodological analysis tools are applied to both visual signs and verbal language. The analysis tools make it possible to identify obvious or underlying discourses and their meaning in the material. 

The semiotic resources that emerge are deconstructed and the results are discussed based on five identified themes. Discourses about abortion as an undramatic decision and structural barriers dominate the films. However, it appears in the material that the discourse on abortion as undramatic takes a different direction in the films. The results show that the presentation of abortion-seeking women is affected by the stigma around abortion and how the woman is portrayed in the light of social expectations and abuse of power. Within these themes, discourses about stigmatization, patriarchy, traditional gender norms and religion emerge. Considering this, the woman is portrayed as emotional and vulnerable, but also as independent and strong as she does not let these factors, or the feeling of shame affect her to the point that an abortion does not occur. The semiotic resources also visualize a theme about how women support each other, which relates to the discourse on sisterhood.
