“There is a culture of striking within SAS” : A qualitative content analysis of SAS crisis communication (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The aim of this study is to analyze the crisis communication executed by Scandinavian Airlines (SAS) during two labor strikes that took place in 2019 and 2022. Both of the strikes broke out as a consequence of broken negotiations between SAS and the Scandinavian pilot associations. In the media, the strikes are described to have led to financial losses for SAS, as well as negatively affecting travelers' trust in the organization. When stakeholders' expectations of an organization are violated, there is a risk of major consequences for the organization, such as damage to the relationship with stakeholders and damage to the reputation. To reduce the potential damage to the organization's reputation, the organization needs to apply crisis communication.

The purpose of this study is to analyze SAS's external crisis communication during the pilot strikes in 2019 and 2022. The material to be analyzed in this study is three press releases from each strike, and these are obtained from the SAS press channel. To fulfill this purpose, research questions have been formulated: How has SAS applied crisis strategies from Situational Crisis Communication Theory during the strikes in 2019 and 2022? How have tactics from the crisis strategies been applied? How does SAS relate to recommendations within SCCT? Which type of crisis are the strikes interpreted as belonging to?

In the study, Situational Crisis Communication Theory (SCCT) is applied as a theoretical framework, and qualitative targeted content analysis as a method. Through coding schemes, the material has been coded and categorized to provide answers to the questions. The result shows that SAS applies instructing information, adjusting information, denial, rebuilding, and bolstering. Regarding tactics, scapegoating, compensation, reminding, and victimage were found. Of the strategies instructing and adjusting information, all associated tactics were found. Both strikes in 2019 and 2022 are considered to belong to the preventable category as it is considered that the strikes could have been avoided. This conclusion implies that the crises that hit SAS in 2019 and 2022 most likely have brought with them a major threat to SAS’s reputation and also that strong attributions of crisis responsibility has been attributed to the company. Furthermore, SAS is considered to have followed the recommendations of the SCCT to some extent, but the application of inappropriate strategies and tactics was also identified.
