”You’re like really emotionally intelligent.” : A Comparison Between a Fictional Autistic Media Character and Research on Real-Life Autistic People (English)
Abstract [sv]
Abstract [en]
There is currently an issue in society where autistic individuals are not being recognised as autistic because they do not fit the preconceptions of autism that people have in their mind. Media content have the power to influence what is considered to be ‘autistic’, since it can produce and reproduce how autistic people are ‘supposed to be’. By using a comparative analysis, this study has aimed to understand if a fictional autistic character who were created with the help of an autistic individual produce and reproduce preconceptions about autistic people that are in line with how autism can be displayed in autistic people in real life. This study has investigated how the autistic tv show character resembles or differs from how scientific research claim that autism can be displayed in autistic people in real life. This study demonstrates that the autistic fictional media character who were created with the help of an autistic individual, produce and reproduce preconceptions about autistic people that are in line with how autism can be displayed in autistic people in real life.
