A plate served with cookies, predictions and customized communication : A qualitative interview study with generation X about surveillence capitalism and individualized marketing communication (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study research how three focus groups from generation X comprehend, think, and speak about the phenomenon of surveillance capitalism and individualized marketing communication. Today it is common that advertising and marketing communication can be exposed to individuals based on surveillance capitalism, and that users leave their personal preferences online. This can be done based on the fact that users accept both cookies and the terms of use without assessing what is communicated. This means that the users are unaware of the information they are emitting. This study investigates how the focus groups reason about individualized marketing communication, which is based on what information has been collected about them online. It is carried out through a qualitative interview study in order to then carry out a qualitative content analysis of the collected empirical data, then analyze the empirical data together with the theoretical framework. The study is based on Kotler's feedback model, decoding/encoding, panopticon, the privacy paradox, norms, and IPC.The result of the study shows that the focus groups use social channels because of the societal norms they believe exist and that it is based on avoiding possible exclusion from society. They are aware of the phenomenon of surveillance capitalism but do not have any further knowledge of what it implies. They consider themselves to protect their personal integrity, while not being aware of what information they are leaving behind via their digital footprints. Finally, the focus group indicates that while they appreciate individualized marketing communication when it shows the right content in a good amount, the exposure tends to be too intrusive and perhaps even offensive at times.
