Abstract [sv]

Hjärtsvikt ger svåra symptom i livets slutskede.

Abstract [en]

Heart failure is a chronic disease associated with great suffering for those affected. People with chronic heart failure have recurrent periods of deterioration with great prognostic uncertainty. Through a deeper understanding of the experience of living with heart failure at the end of life, care can be adapted accordingly. Purpose: To describe experiences of living with heart failure at the end of life. Method: A literature review was conducted consisting of sixteen scientific articles of qualitative design. Data analysis has been carried out according to Polit & Beck's nine-step model.

Results: The results show that the experience of living with heart failure at the end of life is associated with feelings of losing control, not having enough information, poor understanding of the disease, fear and anxiety. One of the main themes that has been developed is being confronted with the unknown with sub-themes lack of knowledge, fear and anxiety and safety. Coping with changes in life is the second main theme and has sub-themes of coping with illness, communicating about end of life, end of life losses and caring for oneself. Conclusion: People with heart failure have a reduced awareness of illness and did not perceive themselves to have a fatal illness. The people felt that they did not receive sufficient information or incorrect information about the disease and prognosis. The lack of knowledge about heart failure speaks for further education for healthcare professionals and those who are affected. Heart failure causes severe symptoms at the end of life. People with heart failure do not receive palliative care in the same extent as other patient groups.
