To create something that does not exist, or to work preventing : A study that presents how elementary teachers interpret and relate to norms about sexuality, sex, and gender (English)
Abstract [sv]

Alla intervjuer spelades in och transkriberades före analysarbetet.

Abstract [en]

The Purpose of this study, from a sociocultural perspective, is to contribute knowledge about how teachers engage with norm-critical practices in their educational setting. This was further specified through the research question: How do teachers in grades 4-6 relate to gender norms, norms related to sexuality, and norms related to genus in their school environment? Qualitative data was collected through semi-structured interviews with eight teachers with education in grades 4-6 in a medium-sized municipality in Sweden. All interviews were recorded and transcribed before the analysis work. The results showed that teachers feel that they relate to norm about gender and sex more than they work with norms about sexuality. Some teachers bring up the topic during planned teaching while others only bring it up when the students are proactive in this question. There are divided opinions about whose responsibility it is to teach the subject. Most feel that they have a responsibility, but it is still placed on the teacher who teaches science or social studies, as it is written in the curriculum in those subjects. Ignorance, prejudices, and uncertainty were some reasons why teachers do not work with norms related to gender, sexuality, and sex. Teaching often ends up where teachers are comfortable and tends to fall into heteronormativity. As different teachers perceive the subject differently, individual teachers appreciated when there was a common plan in the school. It forced teachers to conduct some form of teaching on the sensitive subject.
