"What if we replace dystopia with utopia?" : A qualitative study on seven upper secondary school students’ approach to the environmental perspective in the subject Swedish (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

An environmental perspective must permeate all teaching according to the upper secondary school curriculum. The students must partly develop the ability to analyze the interaction of humans with their environment and partly develop a personal approach to global environmental issues. The aim of this study is therefore to contribute knowledge about how the school subject Swedish in upper secondary school can take the environmental perspective into account through dystopian fiction. Focus has been placed on analyzing the understanding that students show of the relationship between human and the environment, as well as which attitudes toward climate change they express, after reading dystopian fiction with a climate theme. The study's theoretical framework has partly been based on Langer's (2017) literary understanding and partly on the ecocritical perspective. The data consists of seven high school students' written submissions in which questions about two dystopian short stories have been answered. The students have also participated in a focus group interview which focuses on how the short stories can contribute with knowledge about climate change. A thematic analysis has been carried out which gave rise to the result's categories; the students' understanding of the causes and consequences of climate change, as well as the attitudes of hopefulness, engagement, concern, denial and indifference. The results show that dystopian short stories with a climate theme can contribute to students developing the ability to analyze human interaction with the environment. This is because the fictional stories show new perspectives on climate change. However, challenges are presented in using the short stories for students to develop a personal approach to the global environmental issues because the short stories mainly evoke negative feelings.
