Programming in the mathematics subject : How and when do students use the body as a tool when programming a robot (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

When students encounter teaching based on the theory of embodied cognition, their engagement can increase, and their results can be improved by using their bodies. The students can use the body in several different ways in programming lessons, for example when the students program a robot, as they can use their bodies to perceive rotations and how the robot should move. This study will be built on the theory of embodied cognition. The theory will permeate the entire project. The purpose of this study is to contribute knowledge about how students in the early school years solve programming tasks by using embodied cognition in mathematics education. This purpose is fulfilled through the following research questions: How do students use their bodies to perceive direction in programming within mathematics? And in what situations do students use their body as a tool when programming a robot? The data was collected through field notes and audio recordings of five group observations that were transcribed and analyzed. The results showed that students used three different strategies to solve programming tasks, which were: pointing, using other hand gestures, and performing manual movements. Based on these strategies, it was revealed that the students used their bodies to perform the tasks in three different situations: to visualize different paths the robot could take, to perceive the robot's position, and to determine which buttons the students needed to press. Based on these strategies, three different situations emerged where the students used the body to carry out the programming tasks. The different situations were to see different paths the robot could go, the robot's position and which buttons the students needed to press.
