Systematic article placement in warehouse (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This work deals with the area of creating a systematic article placement at Kitron AB. The purpose of the work is to reduce transport distances and the time required to carry out a pick. This is to be accomplished by placing articles based on a combination of its product family and its picking frequency, in other words, the similarity principle and the popularity principle are applied. To achieve good results, the following three questions are answered:

[1]  Which parameter is of highest importance when placing articles in Kitron AB's high-bay warehouse?[2]  What can an article placement look like to reduce handling losses?[3]  How should the company work to maintain a systematic article placement? To carry out the work, data from the company's business system is used. Literature studies provide access to appropriate theories on different placement principles. From this, it can be deduced that the company has no systematic article placement and many of the articles picked in the same order are well spread out across the warehouse.

An ABC-analysis based on picking frequency is carried out on all articles but also on product families. This is to be able to identify which article and product families should be prioritized when a new article placement is created. This work is based on product families as the company always picks articles within the same product family.

The product family with the highest picking frequency shows that the articles within this are currently scattered among all aisles with pallet racking. In the result, each product family has a fixed zone in the warehouse. These zones vary in size between the different product families based on their need for the number of pallet places. In addition to this, the articles have floating placement within these zones as this means that the need for pallet places is lower. When verifying the result, a time reduction of 42 % is shown compared to the current situation when picking. Since all items in each product family are gathered, this results in reduced transport distances.
