2024 (Swedish)Independent thesis Basic level (university diploma), 10 credits / 15 HE creditsStudent thesisAlternative title
Women's experience after a mastectomy : A literature review with a qualitativeapproach (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Breast cancer is globally the most common cancer among women, breast cancer is the fifth biggest cancer which leads to death. The diagnosis conclude big changes for the women which affect the quality of life. The most common treatment to remove the cancer is mastectomy. Nurses  capacity of good nursing care is a central part to promote health. A model that further a good process of dealing with life changing circumstances is Antonovsky’s “sense of coherense”. Aim: To describe women’s experiences after going through mastectomy followed by breast cancer. Method: A literature review with an inductive approach based on twelve qualitative articles. The analysis contained Friberg's five-step model. Results: After the analysis there emerged three main categories followed by seven sub categories. The main categories are: body image, the surroundings and adaptation. Conclusion: Women's experiences after mastectomy are complex and individual. For the nurse to have the competence to help the woman to manage her situation, an understanding of the challenging factors the woman may come into contact with is needed. By applying the theory of sense of coherence, it is possible to increase the woman's well-being.
