Bearer of testimony : A qualitative literature review of Swedish volunteer soldiers' change process of combat during the 1900s. (English)
Abstract [en]

The aim of this study was to contribute knowledge about the aspects of the change process Swedish soldiers experienced in the services of foreign armies during the 20th century. The research questions focused on how the soldiers described the change before, during and after combat. The theoretical framework used was Samuel Hyne‟s personal narrative theory that is presented in his work The Soldier’s Tale. The study used a qualitative method where the data consisted of five published books by swedes that have experienced combat firsthand and later publish works regarding that matter. The results showed that the soldiers first experience with death, either that of friend or foe has had an impact on their lives. Another finding based on Hynes‟ work has been how the technical advances of weaponry such as machine guns and artillery during the First World War have gone on to impact other later conflicts during the 20th century.
