Occupational therapy interventions for parents of children with neurodevelopmental disorder : A scoping review (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Background: Children with neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) affect the family situation and can lead to increased parental stress. Occupational therapy interventions for parents of children with NDD therefore need to be identified. Aim: The aim of the study was to identify and describe occupational therapy interventions for parents of children with neurodevelopmental disorders based on OTIPM´s intervention models. Method: A scoping review was conducted. Four databases were used to identify relevant studies and the sample consisted of twelve articles. The summary of the results is presented based on a content analysis where OTIPM's intervention models were used as a deductive framework. Results: The results are presented based on the four OTIPM intervention models. The occupational therapy interventions identified for parents of children with NDD in the compensatory model were POET, OBC, CI-ASD, Regul-A and MealSense. In the education and teaching model they were OPC and HMHF. In the acquisitional model they were the intervention play therapy, and in the restorative model, the interventions parent training programs based on the DIR model, play therapy and MBSR-OT. Conclusions: There are several occupational therapy interventions that can be lined to all OTIPM intervention models. Research in the European context is needed to enable occupational therapists in Sweden to implement occupational therapy interventions with evidence to parents with children with NDD. Implications: The study may contribute to a better understanding of what occupational therapy interventions are available for parents of children with NDD.
