The role of reading aloud in the classroom : An interview study on how teachers describe and justify their way of working with reading aloud in grades F–3 (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

This study aims to explore teacher’s use of reading aloud as a pedagogical method to promote pupils’ language development. The following research questions are therefore the basis of the study: How do the teachers think that their work with reading aloud can support the students' language development? How do the teachers describe their design of read-aloud lessons to promote learning? Through semi-structured interviews with seven teachers from different schools in the same county, working methods and motives for reading aloud in teaching were analyzed. This study is based on the sociocultural perspective, which is about learning in interaction with others. The results highlighted dialogic reading aloud as a central and effective method for promoting students’ language development. By giving pupils the opportunity to engage with the text, their ability to reflect on the content was facilitated, which also supported their critical thinking. The teacher’s engagement and planning were considered two crucial factors for creating meaningful reading aloud moments for the pupils. However, a minority of the teachers were noted to see reading aloud as a relaxing moment rather than a pedagogical activity.
