Integration issues have been the subject of debate in Sweden for a long time but saw renewed political interest in the summer of 2016. There are great expectations regarding what sports associations can do for the integration of children and youth with a foreign background. How- ever, some believe that these expectations are too high. This sparked interest in investigating experiences related to the issue through interviews with individuals connected to a local football association. The study aimed to answer whether sports associations can contribute to integration and what they need to succeed. The results showed there were differences in how the interview- ees understood integration and how it could be measured. The belief in the sports association’s ability to contribute to integration was strong; however, research shows that the social and cul- tural integration of young people with a foreign background is not progressing measurably in Sweden. It is likely that the association contributes to integration through young people’s en- joyment and the positive effects this brings. The results also showed that there were several areas within the current association's work with integration that have the potential to develop, based on what research identifies as important areas to consider for achieving integration. More resources, knowledge, favorable structures, political will, increased political understanding, more collaborations, complementary activities, and clear objectives are likely needed for sports associations to effectively contribute to the integration of young people with a foreign back- ground in Sweden.
