The dialogical possibilities of the classroom : An observation- and interviewstudy about dialogic reading aloud in multilingual classrooms in grades 1-3 (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

The purpose of the study is to contribute knowledge about the meaning of and approach to dialogic reading aloud. The study is based on observations of dialogic reading aloud in six linguistically heterogeneous classrooms in grades 1–3 and an equal number of interviews with the teachers about the completed teaching. To achieve the purpose of the study, the research questions were formulated: What ways of concretely implementing teaching can be observed before, during and after dialogic reading aloud? and How do the teachers justify the choice of literature and activities in connection with dialogic reading aloud? The methods of the study are as follows, observations of classroom practices with subsequent interviews of the teachers. The respondents in the study consist of six qualified teachers in different classes who are professionals at three different schools in two different municipalities. The collected material has been analyzed based on the socio-cultural theory. The results show that students today encounter a more or less planned reading aloud where differences lie in the purpose and planning of the teaching. All the teachers in the study use dialogic reading aloud as a language development activity to strengthen the students' language development. Activities that appear repeatedly in the survey are the teacher's use of body language and tone of voice, discussing words and understanding of concepts as well as asking open questions and exploring images connected to the text. However, a challenge is considered to be the time aspect for all students to be able to participate and participate with their thoughts, feelings and questions. In summary, the results show that the dialogic reading aloud needs to be well planned, with a given purpose and that there is time for processing, where all the teacher's choice of activities is of utmost importance to support students in their language development.
