This study draws on staged teaching regarding reading aloud- activities with first-grade students. Drawing on dialogic respective monologic standpoints the picture book Molnbullar has been read aloud at two different elementary schools, in four groups, in a municipality in southern Sweden. After the staged teaching, the students' were to place the books’ pictures in chronological order. The staged teaching continued with semi-structured group interviews with students from all four different groups. The study was conducted with a sociocultural theoretical perspective and Langer’s five step model of reading stances. The purpose of the study is to contribute with knowledge regarding monologic and dialogic reading aloud in the F-3 classroom reading instruction. The research questions are: How does teachers' monologic and dialogic reading influence students' ability to orally retell a text? What are students' perceptions of teachers' reading aloud? The result of the study shows that the teacher's choice of reading aloud methods impacts the students' verbally retelling. All students that were involved in and listened to the dialogic reading aloud method were able to place the pictures in chronological order and were able to retell the plot of the book with a lot of details, unlike the students that encountered the monologic reading aloud method. Furthermore, the majority of the students from all four groups found that the reading climate in the classroom was partly messy. They expressed a wish that the climate should be calm when a teacher reads aloud. The students also believe the teacher’s reading aloud is an important part of their education and contributes to their further reading knowledge.
