Abstract [en]

Purpose – In the rapidly changing logistics industry, especially in warehouse operations, companies face significant challenges related to skills supply. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the possibilities for skills supply for warehouse operators in logistics companies with warehouse operations. To achieve this purpose, it has been broken down into three research questions. The first research question is: What challenges exist for skills supply in operational warehouse work for companies with warehouse operations? The second is: What are the most important technical skills required for operational warehouse work for companies with warehouse operations? The third is: How can matching companies enable the right skills for companies with warehouse operations in the logistics industry?

Method – The study's design is a case study. The empirical data consists of qualitative data. The data collection techniques used are interviews, observations, and document studies. The interviews and observations were semi-structured. The interviews were conducted with both the case company and the case company's clients, while the observations were conducted at two of the case company's clients. The document study consisted of meeting minutes and requirement specifications from the case company.

Findings – The results show that the biggest challenges for skills supply are changing competency requirements due to technological advancements such as automation and digitalization, difficulties in recruiting qualified warehouse operators, and high staff turnover. The necessary technical competencies include handling warehouse management systems, to manage and maintain warehouse equipment. Job matching companies can facilitate the right competence through close relationships with clients, effective communication, and continuous feedback and follow-up.

Implications – The study contributes to an increased understanding of managing skills supply in warehouse operations and the tools required to achieve improvements. Theoretically, it introduces a new perspective on skills supply for warehouse operators in logistics companies by highlighting critical technical competencies and the role of matching companies. Practically, companies can use the results to improve their recruitment and training strategies.

Limitations – Limitations of the study include that it was conducted as a case study on a specific matching company in a specific area, which may affect the generalizability of the results. Additionally, the study focuses only on the technical competencies of warehouse operators and not on administrative tasks or economic analyses of how skills supply affects the companies' economy.
