Introduction- A study conducted by two construction engineering students at Jönköping University of Technology. In collaboration with the consulting firm WSP, international collaborations have been examined with a focus on Sweden and Germany. The aim has been to identify how the differences in building standards between the countries affect collaboration, the challenging and favorable aspects it brings, and how effective communication can be promoted. This is to provide a basis for a current project WSP is working on and to broaden knowledge in the field. 

Method – The study is a survey where the relationships between various aspects of building standards and communication in Sweden and Germany have been investigated. A qualitative approach has been used, applying interviews and document studies as data collection techniques. Interviews with five respondents with work experience in different countries and document studies analyzing construction documents and laws have been conducted. 

Results – Through the study's interviews and document studies, empirical data have been gathered, showing that Sweden and Germany apply different building standards and regulations. Its main focuses are not equivalent, which can create difficulties in projects.  The collaboration between Sweden and Germany has both favorable and challenging aspects. The favorable aspects include the ability to benefit from each other's expertise and the creation of new collaboration partners.  Challenging factors often include the language barrier and the need to map out the different regulations that exist.  Measures to achieve effective communication are described as maintaining clear and structured documentation and continuous feedback between all parties. The risks that can be identified from this are primarily the language barrier and the cultural clashes and interpretations it leads to. 

Discussion – The results have many strengths, such as well-developed and concrete interview responses and documents based on credible sources with relevant information published by government agencies and institutes. The weaknesses in these have mainly been that only five interviews were conducted. A larger number would have increased credibility and contributed to more comparisons.  The results of the study indicate both challenging and favorable aspects, as well as how effective communication can be promoted to minimize the risks posed by the challenging aspects. Compared to previous research, similar results were found, with this study adding additional information. Documentation and clarity are considered crucial for understanding and the success of the project.  

Introduktion- En studie som genomförts av två byggingenjörsstudenter på Jönköpings Tekniska Högskola. I samarbete med konsultföretaget WSP har internationella samarbeten undersökts med fokus på Sverige och Tyskland.  Målet har varit att identifiera hur ländernas skillnader i byggstandarder påverkar samarbetet, vilka utmanande och gynnsamma aspekter det medför samt hur effektiv kommunikation kan främjas. Detta för att skapa ett underlag inför ett aktuellt projekt WSP arbetar med och för att bredda kunskaperna inom området. 

Metod – Studien är en kartläggning där samband mellan olika aspekter inom byggstandarder och kommunikation i Sverige och Tyskland har undersökts. En kvalitativ ansats där intervjuer och dokumentstudie har använts som datainsamlingstekniker. Intervjuer med fem respondenter med arbetslivserfarenhet i olika länder samt dokumentstudie där bland annat bygghandlingar och lagar analyserats. 

Resultat – Med hjälp av studiens intervjuer och dokumentstudie har empiri samlats som besvarat att Sverige och Tyskland tillämpar olika byggstandarder och regelverk. Dess huvudfokus är inte likvärdiga vilket kan skapa svårigheter i projekt.   Att Sverige och Tyskland samarbetar har både gynnsamma och utmanande aspekter. De gynnsamma benämns bland annat vara att man kan dra nytta av andras kompetenser samt att nya samarbetspartners skapas.  Utmanande faktorer är i många fall språkbarriären och att de olika regleringar som finns måste kartläggas.  Åtgärder för att uppnå effektiv kommunikation beskrivs vara att upprätthålla tydlig och strukturerad dokumentation samt kontinuerlig återkoppling mellan alla parter. De risker som kan urskiljas ur detta är främst språkbarriären samt de kulturkrockar och tolkningar som den leder till. 

Diskussion – Resultaten har många styrkor som exempelvis välutvecklade och konkreta intervjusvar samt dokument baserade på trovärdiga källor med relevant information som statliga myndigheter och institut har utgivit. Svagheter i dessa har främst varit att endast fem intervjuer genomfördes. Ett större antal hade ökat trovärdigheten och bidragit till mer jämförelse. Resultatet för studien anger utmanande aspekter samt gynnsamma, även hur man kan främja den effektiva kommunikationen för att minimera riskerna som de utmanande aspekterna medför. I jämförelse med tidigare forskning påvisades liknande resultat där denna studie dock tillförde ytterligare information. Dokumentation och tydlighet anses vara avgörande för förståelse och projektets framgång.
