Towards Net Zero: A Comparison of Climate Calculations between Sweden and UK and Architect's Perspective on the Approaches (English)

Introduction - This thesis is written within the framework of the education program Building Technology: Building Design with Architecture, at Tekniska Högskolan in Jönköping. In collaboration with the company White, a comparative case study has been conducted between Sweden and the UK's approach to climate calculations for new construction, as well as the architect's view on the effectiveness of the approaches. The aim of the study is to define differences and to examine the role of the architect in the work.
Method - The study has used a qualitative comparative case study as its method, where the research methods have been document study and interviews. This includes both primary data collection and secondary data collection and was considered necessary to be able to answer all the research questions in the study in a good way.
Results - The results of the study showed that it is possible to define differences in the way the countries perform climate calculations. It also showed that there is a knowledge gap in the industry and that the competence among architects varies. It is noted that both countries' approaches have both advantages and disadvantages in terms of their effectiveness in steering towards reduced climate impact. In Sweden, there is a law on climate declaration for new construction, which is not the case in the UK. However, the UK has a more developed method for climate calculations, even though there is no regulation.
Analysis - The analysis emphasizes the importance of the architect's role in climate calculations early in the process, as it is the greatest opportunity to affect the climate emissions. The importance of limit values is highlighted by all respondents and is considered necessary to be able to really influence the carbon dioxide emissions.
Discussion - This chapter links the results of the study, that countries have different approaches, to previous research on how this inhibits the industry towards common development. It also notes the lack of British architects as respondents in the study and that their views on climate calculations would have been an interesting aspect of the study.
