Motivated readers: the key to promoting students' reading interest : A study on school librarians' efforts to foster a love of reading in collaboration with swedish teachers (English)
Abstract [en]

The purpose of this study is to investigate how school librarians promote reading to motivate students and how the collaboration between Swedish teachers and school librarians is structured. The study highlights both how school librarians collaborate with teachers and vice versa. The theory that the study is based on is the behaviorist theory, which was developed in part by Skinner and is based on various behaviors. In this study, intrinsic and extrinsic motivation, which are part of the behaviorist perspective, have been significant.

Nine school librarians were interviewed through semi-structured interviews, and 27 teachers participated through questionnaires. The results show the significant impact school librarians have on promoting a love of reading and the importance of collaboration between the different professional roles within a school. Becoming a proficient reader is necessary to be a part of society, and the interviews revealed that teachers are more focused on reading training while school librarians are more oriented towards fostering a love of reading.
