Games journalism - a deserved bad reputation? : A journalistic comparative analysis between special interest journalism and traditional news journalism (English)
Abstract [en]
This study asks if the bad reputation gaming journalism has had in quite some time is because of the quality of its articles and what connection that has to the negative opinion of wider niche journalism. This study has taken some news sources, two journalistic editorial gaming publications: IGN Nordic and Gamereactor. Then compared them to two legacy news organizations: Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet. The goal of these comparisons is to see if there are differences in quality between the journalistic types that can potentially explain why gaming journalism has garnered its bad reputation. It is known gaming journalism has had a controversial past the last ten years and we agree that that is one contributing factor to the reputation. But the reputation says that gaming journalism is a lower form of journalism. An analytical table was made to measure the different aspects of the articles. Along with the theoretical framework of journalistic text analysis, media logic and news value. The result of this study shows that there are noticeable differences between the two different types of journalism. From the language used in the texts, to how both types are used on their digital platform a noticeable difference was seen.
As a result, the study concluded that the two journalistic categories had two completely different priorities and values when it came to why and how information was published and what goals were in mind at the different organizations. Also, according to the parameters that this study measures the quality of both journalistic types, it was concluded that the gaming journalism publications are noticeably lower in quality than legacy news publisher. This can be seen as a confirmation of the negative opinion of niche journalism.
