Bee-Foraged Pollen as a Bioindicator for Sustainable Urban Planning using GIS (English)
Abstract [en]
In the 21st century, the global shift toward urbanization has intensified, with over half of the world's population residing in urban areas. This urban expansion presents profound environmental challenges, affecting climate, air and water quality, and biodiversity. These issues, critical to both ecosystem balance and public health, demand innovative monitoring approaches to guide sustainable urban development. This master's thesis investigates the potential of honeybees (Apis mellifera) and the pollen they forage as bioindicators to monitor environmental health in urban landscapes, providing insights for urban planners and authorities. Using a design research methodology approach that includes a comprehensive scoping review, interviews with urban planners, and qualitative testing, this research helped develop a GIS plugin to visualize and analyze environmental data, offering actionable recommendations to aid urban planners and authorities in the urban design process. The research concludes that the data analyzed through the GIS plugin can provide a comprehensive overview that supports informed decision-making.
