Revitalization of Dalvik´s center (English)
Abstract [en]

The thesis is written in collaboration with Jönköping municipality's city planning office.Cities are according to Jan Gehl (2010) places where people gather to shop, enjoythemselves and exchange ideas. People's well-being is dependent on public spaces suchas streets, squares, and parks.

This report observes social and ecological sustainability aspects as well as whatconstitutes Jönköping municipality's urban planning vision. Dalvik is located in thewest of Jönköping and is the area this project will focus on. Today Dalvik lacks someof the conditions for the area to have good social sustainability. The area is in need ofrevitalization to create a livelier, more inclusive, and more environmentally friendlysociety. The study aims to understand the areas current flaws and from them create adesign proposal by analyzing theories, previous studies, and the publics opinions.Together with the city planning office this report aims to work as a basis for a futureproject regarding the development of Dalvik.

The study will be carried out in different steps and will start with examining alreadyexisting literature and analyzing the area to identify its strengths and weaknesses. Theinhabitants of Dalvik will be engaged in the project through a survey to gatherinformation about their experience in contrast to what urban planning theories say aboutthe area. By using earlier literature and the survey responses a design proposal is createdthat will encourage social sustainability for Dalviks center. To give a detailed image ofDalvik and the most important aspects of social sustainability in city planning thisreport will be a case study.

The study's credibility is ensured by use of a combination of qualitative and quantitativemethods and aims to produce a high degree of reliability and validity in the survey. Asurvey consisting of both rating scales and questions with the ability to write freely isused to measure and explore the people's opinions and experiences. The respondentshave been divided into age groups to get a more detailed view of how the inhabitants think about Dalvik.

The survey results show that there are multiple challenges in Dalvik regarding its socialsustainability. The greatest problems are the areas traffic security issues, lack ofmeeting places and greenery. To support sustainable development and highlight thecurrent problems, measures are proposed based on the theoretical framework and thepeople's experiences and opinions. The design proposal includes rearrangement of thebus stops to create a living plaza with increased access to seating and greenery as wellas parks for recreation and training. Dalvik can be transformed into a more sustainableand pleasant area by combining theory with the people's wishes.
