Abstract [en]
Purpose – This study aims to explore the integration of performance measurements within agile processes. It seeks to understand how performance measurements can be adapted and implemented effectively to enhance predictability and control within these processes.
Methodology – A qualitative research approach was employed, gathering data through interviews and documents. The research focused on a case study within a software development company known for its agile practices. Data collection involved semi-structured interviews with team members across various roles and a review of project documentation to gather insights on current practices and challenges.
Findings – The study identified a gap in consistently applying performance measurements across different teams. While some teams successfully utilized measurements to track progress and forecast future performance, others struggled with integrating these measurements into their daily workflows. Key challenges included the variability in adopting agile practices and aligning performance measurements with actual team and organizational goals.
Analysis – The analysis identified that certain performance measurements in the literature were used in practice. Furthermore, based on the empirical findings, the use of performance measurements to improve various aspects of agile processes was elaborated upon. Performance measurements can also be adapted and implemented through generalization and bottom-up considerations.
Implications – This study's implications provide a framework for better integrating performance measurement in agile environments. Theoretically, it contributes to agile processes by highlighting the importance of adaptive performance measurement systems that align with the dynamic nature of agile projects.
Conclusions – The study concludes that performance measurements consider predictability, productivity, and quality of development and production. To be effective in agile processes, performance measurement must be flexible, transparent, and co-developed by the teams that will use them. It emphasizes the need for ongoing support to ensure that all team members understand and use these measurements effectively to drive continuous improvement.
