Abstract [en]
This thesis aims to analyse and expand upon existing theories of social imaginaries, with the objective to establish social imagining; a practice of evaluating existing imaginaries and creating new ones, with a focus on true social imaginaries. Specifically, I aim to answer the questions of whether social imagining can impact the understanding of patriarchy, and what format or context might effectively facilitate it.
I examine literature on patriarchy, social imaginaries, generation Z learning methods and roleplaying games, after which a case study in the form of a gameplay workshop was created. The workshop consisted of five participants taking part in multiple sessions of a Dungeons and Dragons game in a fictional world without patriarchy, in addition to semi-structured interviews that were coded and analysed through the lens of feminist standpoint theory and intersectional feminism.
The results showed that the concept and format opened the door for participants to not only examine their views and experiences of patriarchy, but also to foster a deeper understanding of patriarchy itself. The workshop and consequent interviews also led the participants to a deeper introspection regarding topics such as self-worth and gender identity.
