Challenges and future opportunities for contractors in the reuse of frame materials : A Study on identification and solutions (English)
Abstract [sv]

Abstract [en]

Introduction (and aim) – Societies around the world are facing pressure from pollution, lack of resources and climate change, with the construction industry playing a big role in carbon dioxide emissions. An increased awareness of the need for sustainability and social responsibility is driving the industry towards more environmentally friendly methods. Despite this, the construction industry faces challenges when it comes to adapt the reuse of frame materials. The lack of research on the construction contractor's challenges when using recycled frame material is clear. By limiting the study to Swedish building operators and focusing on frame materials, the study wants to gain a deeper understanding of the specific conditions within the country and the subject.

Method – The study uses exploratory research to understand the challenges faced by construction contractors in using recycled frame materials and what changes need to be made to promote this. Despite the disadvantages of exploratory research, it is the most favourable method for this study as the goal is not to reach a concrete result. Without understanding the subject more thoroughly and exploring uncertainties in the field.

Results – The results present eight themes that have been identified through a thematic analysis of collected data on the use of recycled frame materials. These themes include logistical challenges, industry ignorance, legal difficulties, financial barriers, the need for a bank of recycled frame materials, supplier responsibility, building with existing materials and different forms of contracting.

Analysis – Construction contractors face several challenges with reused frame materials, including logistical, legal, financial and knowledge barriers. The solutions that can promote reused frame materials are to create a bank for recycled frame materials, increased responsibility for suppliers and to change the mindset of building from existing materials. Partnering or turnkey contracting with collaboration can be a presumption for promoting reused frame materials.

Discussion – The study's findings regarding challenges are confirmed with the theoretical framework. Previous research shows that the challenges in reusing frame materials that the respondents have experienced are not only found in the Swedish construction industry but also around the world.
