This thesis investigates the framing of the Israel-Hamas conflict in two of Sweden’s leading newspapers, Dagens Nyheter and Svenska Dagbladet, during the first month following the significant escalation on October 7, 2023. Employing a qualitative content analysis of 49 news articles, the study examines the specific framing strategies, language choices, and source attributions used in the coverage, with a particular focus on the representations of Palestinians and Israelis. The analysis reveals that Dagens Nyheter predominantly framed the conflict through a security lens, emphasizing Israel's right to defend itself against perceived threats, while Svenska Dagbladet more frequently highlighted the humanitarian consequences of the conflict, focusing on the impact on Palestinian civilians. The findings demonstrate how these editorial choices contribute to different portrayals of the conflict in the Swedish press and reflect underlying biases in the representation of the parties involved. This research enhances the understanding of media framing by illustrating how major Swedish newspapers navigate and construct narratives around complex international conflicts, ultimately shaping public perception.
