Abstract [en]
Purpose: The thesis aims to critically examine the importance of reviving green mobility using battery recycling impact on sustainable EV manufacturing in Europe. More so, the objective of the study assesses the impact of supply chain management and quality control management on the process of sustainable electric vehicle (EV) battery manufacturing in Europe, with a focus on promoting green mobility and reducing environmental footprints. Method: A qualitative approach was employed, focusing on a leading European EV battery manufacturer. Data was collected through semi structured interviews with key personnel and comprehensive document analysis and analyzed using qualitative content analysis techniques. Findings: The study reveals that advanced hydrometallurgical battery recycling processes contribute to sustainable EV manufacturing by enabling material recovery, reducing demand for virgin raw materials, and mitigating waste generation. Furthermore, extensive use of renewable energy sources, primarily hydroelectricity, in cell production processes significantly reduces supply chain emissions. Notably, ambitious carbon footprint target aligns with stringent science-based decarbonization goals. Implications: The findings provide valuable insights and best practices for the broader EV industry in Europe, highlighting the potential of battery recycling and renewable energy integration to contribute to sustainable mobility solutions. However, addressing economic and technological barriers associated with these practices requires collaboration among industry stakeholders, policymakers, and research institutions. Limitations: The study's generalizability may be limited due to the single-case focus within the European context. Additionally, the reliance on self-reported data and methodological constraints are acknowledged.
