Abstract [en]

An exit is the inevitable culmination of all entrepreneurial journeys. This final stage doeshave a major impact, not only on the entrepreneur but also on the firm and the broadereconomy. Despite its importance, research on exits from the entrepreneur’s perspectiveremains limited, resulting in under-theorization. The purpose of this thesis is to examinethe entrepreneurial exit strategies and exit decisions of SME owners in Sweden. Using aqualitative method, semi-structured interviews were conducted with former businessowners who had experienced an exit. The findings reveal that entrepreneurs do have agood understanding of the exit process and its key factors, which results in a high levelof satisfaction with their exits. The major factors that influence exit strategies anddecisions include the chosen exit route, the trigger of the exit, and the entrepreneur’s valuesystem. Furthermore, the type of entrepreneurship, growth- or lifestyle-oriented, doeshave an impact on what may trigger the exit and the entrepreneur’s value properties.
