Background: Sleep deprivation has a negative impact on health and wellbeing of patients worldwide. A good care environment includes both the psychological and physical environment. The nurse has a responsibility in evaluating patients´ sleep and provide relevant nursing measures in the case of sleep deprivation. Aim: The aim was to map factors that affected patients´ sleep in hospital. Method: This is a literature review using a quantitative approach. The studies were searched for in the databases CINAHL and PubMed. The studies were quality reviewed according to a quality review protocol for basic quality criteria for studies with a quantitative method. The Friberg´s five analysis steps were used for the analysis of quantitative studies in the result. Results: The factors that had the greatest impact on patients´ sleep were noise and nursing actions. Sounds that affected patients' sleep came, for example, from medical equipment and other patients in the same room. Nursing measures that negatively affected patients' sleep were, for example, nurse visits, doctor visits and medication distribution. Brightness, psychological factors, room temperature and room influence had an impact on sleep as well. Conclusion: Education about factors that affect sleep can lead to actions that improve patients´ sleep in the hospital, which can create better conditions for recovery from illness. Through several different nursing measures, the nurse can improve patients´ sleep in hospital.
